Students, parents and Right At School educators are coming together to assist with a world-record setting effort to collect the most socks in an hour.

The effort has helped create new ways for young students to learn about the joy of giving to others, as they bring socks into their schools and join the historic effort.

“It’s great watching the kids get excited about something as essential as socks,” said Amanda Frawley, Area Manager for Right At School, whose schools include Brunswick, Buckeye, Cloverleaf, Mayfield and Saint Paschal. “They are learning the value of helping others and giving back.”

The students who participate in the Right At School aftercare program at more than 20 schools in and around Cleveland have all been encouraged to bring new socks for toddlers, children, men or women. The students decorated donation bins and have been spreading the word among classmates.

The entire effort is the brainchild of Holly Jackson, who founded Walls of Love as a way of providing basic items to homeless people in direct and straightforward ways - usually by creating a ‘wall’ of ziplock bags where people in need to gather everything from toothbrushes and feminine hygiene products to socks and shampoo.

Wall items are placed strategically so those in need can take what they need without any red tape or shame.

According to Jackson, the world record for the number of pairs of socks donated for a charitable cause is 2,500 in one hour. Jackson said she’s hoping to demolish the world record for sock donations with so many that the record can never be broken.

For media interested in the event, socks are being collected all week at schools where Right At School provides aftercare programming. The primary activity will be the sharing of the donated socks with Walls of Love on October 4th, from 10-11 am at 3000 St. Clair Avenue NE Cleveland Ohio 44114.
