EnerSys (NYSE: ENS), a global leader in stored energy solutions for industrial, infrastructure, and defense applications, today announced development progress on the Alpha® XM Edge power system, a new outside plant power platform for cable broadband networks.
The Alpha® XM Edge power system uses a digital switch-mode architecture designed to improve power-conversion efficiency, simplify field service and provide greater visibility into power-system conditions. The system is progressing toward commercial availability in 2027.
As broadband operators increase network capacity and evolve their access networks, power demand at the network edge is increasing while energy costs and field-resource constraints are becoming more important operating considerations. Even modest conversion losses at individual sites can accumulate across large installed power-supply estates.
Efficiency is therefore a primary design objective for the Alpha® XM Edge power system. The current design target is up to 96% peak efficiency, subject to completion of product validation and qualification. The digital switch-mode architecture is designed to improve conversion efficiency across a broad operating range compared with earlier ferro-resonant platforms.
The Alpha® XM Edge power system is also being developed around three additional operational priorities:
- Simpler field service: A modular architecture with keyed, field-replaceable functional components is designed to simplify common service tasks and component replacement.
- Greater operational visibility: Embedded sensing, system information and planned mobile- and web-based configuration and diagnostic capabilities are designed to give operators and technicians clearer visibility into power-system condition, performance and service needs.
- Greater adaptability: A configurable architecture supports a broader range of outside plant requirements while reducing the need for multiple dedicated system variants and accommodating evolving network power requirements.
Reliability is a core design requirement. Validation testing includes seamless line-to-standby transfer, redundant power-module operation and protection behavior under surge, overcurrent and short-circuit conditions.
“Broadband operators are asking more of the network edge while managing rising energy costs and field-resource constraints,” said John Hewitt, Vice President, Communications Americas, Network & Infrastructure Solutions at EnerSys. The Alpha® XM Edge power system is being designed to address those demands through higher conversion efficiency, simpler serviceability and greater visibility into system performance. We are validating those capabilities before bringing the system to market.”
For more than 40 years, Alpha® power systems have helped power broadband outside plant networks. The Alpha® XM Edge power system builds on that experience with a focus on higher efficiency, simpler service, greater adaptability and better operational visibility.
Development Progress
The Alpha® XM Edge power system has completed key hardware and software development milestones. Current work includes system integration and validation, customer technical engagement, production-readiness activities and completion of the software capabilities planned for initial commercial release.
Validation includes power-conversion efficiency and performance, line-to-standby transfer, protection behavior, modular serviceability, communications, configuration and field diagnostics. Expanded customer field evaluations are planned for fall 2026.
At SCTE TechExpo26, taking place September 29–October 1, 2026, at the Georgia World Congress Center in Atlanta, Georgia, EnerSys will display a development-stage Alpha® XM Edge power system. It will be incorporated into an outside plant enclosure with supporting energy storage, showing how the Alpha® XM Edge system integrates with supporting energy storage in a representative outside plant configuration.
EnerSys currently targets limited availability in spring 2027, followed by broader commercial availability in summer 2027, subject to successful completion of development, validation, qualification and production-readiness activities.
